Couples & Marriage Therapy

Rebuild connection, trust, and intimacy in your relationship

You used to finish each other’s sentences. Now you can barely finish a conversation without it turning into a fight, or worse… silence.
Maybe you’re roommates who co-parent well but forgot how to be lovers. Maybe one of you crossed a line and you’re both wondering if trust can ever be rebuilt. Maybe you love each other but can’t remember the last time you felt truly connected.

Marriage and couples therapy isn’t about assigning blame or sitting through awkward silence while someone nods sympathetically. It’s about figuring out what actually broke the connection, and learning how to restore it.

Your relationship isn't doomed. You're just stuck in patterns neither of you knows how to break.

Maybe you're feeling...

Disconnected from your partner

You're in the same house but it feels like you're miles apart. You go through the motions but the spark is gone.

Stuck in the same fight on repeat

Different topic, same pattern. One of you shuts down, the other pursues. Or you both explode. Nothing ever gets resolved.

Betrayed and unsure if you can ever trust again

One of you had an affair (emotional or physical). The wound is raw and you're wondering: Can we come back from this?

Like roommates but forgot how to be partners

You're great at managing schedules and kids, but intimacy and connection? That feels like a distant memory.

Scared you're becoming your parents' marriage

You swore you'd never repeat their patterns. But here you are, doing exactly what you watched them do.

Caught between wanting to fix it and to leave

Some days you're ready to fight for the relationship. Other days you fantasize about starting over with someone else, or alone.

And now the question keeping you up at night...
Can we actually get back what we had? Or is it too late?

It’s not too late. But you need to stop doing the same things and expecting different results.

What Couples & Marriage Therapy in Chicago Looks Like

Working With a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT) in Illinois

Couples therapy is an active, collaborative process where you both learn new ways of relating to each other.

Session 1-2: Assessment & Understanding the Pattern
We’ll explore what brought you to therapy, what you’ve tried before, and what’s not working. I’ll help you identify the core conflict pattern; it’s usually not what you think. By the end of session 2, you’ll have clarity on what we’re actually working on.

Session 3-6: Understanding the Neurobiology of Your Conflict
I’ll explain what’s happening in your brains and nervous systems when you fight. Why one of you shuts down (it’s not because they don’t care). Why the other pursues (it’s not to be controlling). Understanding the “why” reduces blame and opens space for change.

Session 7-12: Interrupting Patterns & Building New Skills
This is where transformation happens. We practice new communication strategies IN SESSION (not just as homework you’ll ignore). You’ll learn how to de-escalate conflicts, express needs clearly, and respond to your partner in ways that create safety instead of defensiveness.

Session 13-20: Deepening Connection & Addressing Core Issues
Once communication improves, we go deeper: generational patterns (“I’m doing what my dad did”), unspoken resentments, unmet needs, and how to create the relationship you actually want, not just survive the one you have.

Session 20+: Maintenance & Integration
As things improve, we shift to less frequent sessions, every other week, then monthly check-ins. The goal isn’t to keep you in therapy forever; it’s to give you the tools to navigate conflicts on your own.

What Makes Couples Therapy With Me Different?

I Don't Take Sides

My job isn’t to figure out who’s “right” or “wrong.” It’s to help you both feel heard and understood. I create a space where both partners can be vulnerable without fear of judgment.

You'll Understand the "Why" Behind Your Conflicts

I explain the neurobiology of conflict, why your brain goes into fight-or-flight, why one of you shuts down while the other pursues, and how to interrupt the cycle.

We Practice New Skills IN-SESSION

I don’t just give you “communication homework” you’ll ignore. We role-play difficult conversations in session. You practice expressing needs, active listening, and de-escalation WITH ME as your guide.

Frequently Asked Questions About Couples & Marriage Therapy in Chicago

Most couples see meaningful progress within 3-6 months (12-24 sessions). Some concerns resolve faster, others take longer. We’ll check in regularly to assess progress.

Let’s talk for 15 minutes (free). I’ll tell you honestly whether I think I can help with what you’re facing, and if not, I’ll point you toward resources that can.

I offer Individual Relationship Therapy. You come alone, but we work on the relationship. Many clients find that when they shift how they show up, their partner becomes more open to joining later. And if they never join? You’ll still gain valuable insights and tools.

That’s okay. Therapy can help you figure that out with clarity and compassion. Some couples use therapy to decide whether to stay or go, and that’s a valid goal.

Yes. Some couples come to therapy after separating to see if reconciliation is possible. Others come to navigate a conscious uncoupling with respect and clarity. Both are valid reasons to seek support.

Infidelity recovery is one of my specializations. Rebuilding trust after betrayal is hard, but it’s possible if both partners are willing to do the work. I’ll help the betrayed partner process the trauma and help the partner who strayed understand the impact and rebuild trustworthiness.

Yes! I provide secure online therapy throughout Illinois. Many clients prefer online sessions for convenience and flexibility.

I accept Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, United Healthcare, Cigna, and other major insurers. Contact me to verify your specific plan coverage.
