Chicago in summer is wonderful, and so far, this has been a mild summer! Even casually walking on Michigan Avenue is a great activity – you do not always have to run or bike. I am seeing more runners’ groups and biking groups, which is very encouraging. People are investing in themselves!

Physical activities are not only good for your body, but also for your mind. Research shows that physical activities can improve your mental health in many ways, such as:

  • Releasing feel-good hormones that improve your mood and sleep.
  • Reducing stress and enhancing cognitive function and brain health
  • Helping manage some mental health problems, especially depression and anxiety, by reducing their symptoms.

Physical activities may prevent the onset of depression. People who exercise regularly may experience fewer poor mental health days than those who do not.

Physical activities can also help your relationships with others. Some examples of physical activities that can make relationships stronger are:

  • Doing a team sport or a group exercise class with your friends or family. This can boost your social skills, communication, cooperation, and trust.
  • Going for a walk or a hike with your partner or a loved one. This can increase your intimacy, bonding, and emotional support.
  • Volunteering for a cause that you care about with others. This can give you a sense of purpose, belonging, and gratitude.

Physical activities can be a terrific way to connect with yourself and others. Try to find some physical activities that you enjoy and do them regularly. You may notice a positive difference in your mental health and well-being.
